Oficjalna ceremonia otwarcia Muzeum Bursztynu odbyła w 2006 r. Jego siedzibą jest zabytkowy, unikatowy w skali Europy, gotycko-renasansowy  Zespół Przedbramia ulicy Długiej. Usytuowany jest w centrum krzyżowania się szlaków turystycznych miasta. Składa się z trzech części: Wieży Więziennej, Szyi z Domem Więziennym i Katowni. W swojej długiej historii pełnił wiele funkcji: początkowo wojskowych i komunikacyjnych, a następnie przez ponad 300 lat był używany jako więzienie.
